Thomas, Albert
(1878-1932)
   political figure
   Born in Champigny-sur-Marne, Albert Thomas was a professor of history and author of a study on German trade unionism (Le Syndicalisme allemand, 1903). He worked with jean jaurès as an editor on L'Humanité (1904) and served as a Socialist deputy (1910). During World War I he was undersecretary of state, then minister of armaments (1915-17) and supported a policy of industrial mobilization (tax benefits and high salaries for metallurgical workers). immediately after the war, he was one of the founders of the International Workers Bureau (BIT), on which he served as president from 1920 to 1932.
